The Womens Ice Hockey League was first set up in 1998
by a small group of women keen to establish and compete as an all
womens team. Prior to the establishment of this league women could
only play in the mixed Senior A and B leagues.
The womens league grew and became an official
competitive hockey league under the Canterbury Ice Hockey Association
three years ago. There are now three teams regularly competing in the
league.
The aim of the league is to encourage women to take up
the sport and to provide a place for them to improve their skills and
ability, and gain experience.
From this league the Canterbury Womens Ice Hockey
Team, the Devilettes,
is selected. This team competes each year in the National Tournament
against a team from Auckland and a team selected from various teams in
the lower South Island. The team also has games against the visiting
Canadian Moose Women.
The League welcomes players of all levels from complete
beginners to experienced female players.
The season will commence with some practices in late March and runs
through to October 2003.
Equipment
Helmets and sticks can be provided by the league and
skates can be hired from the rink.
