Womens Ice Hockey Wins
Gold
The Canterbury Womens
Ice Hockey League was delighted when local club team The Mowglies won
unexpected gold at Newcastle in December at the 2nd Southern Cross
Interclub Challenge.
The team was a mix of
novices, juniors and ex representative players from several local club
teams who banded together to travel to Australia, captained by former
NZ Rep Deb Bain. The tournament included club teams from host
Newcastle, Sydney and Canberra, with Canterbury defending the title
from the previous competition held in Christchurch. In the final
Mowglies novice Sara Leadbetter scored a brilliant goal 30secs from
the start and talented 14 year old goalie Jenny Haskell successfully
shut out a fierce attack from Canberra to win 1:0. Adding to the
excitement were nearby bush fires that prevented the team returning to
their hotel several times.
The team was
gratefully supported by small grants from The Canterbury Foundation,
Southern Trust and Womens Ice Hockey. |
